What can cause a drain to clog?

A clogged drain can have various causes. The most common causes are:

Waste Residues

The primary cause of a clogged drain is an excess of waste particles that enter the drain with wastewater. Over time, grease and food residues stick to the inside of the pipes, eventually causing the drain to become blocked.

Blockages

Another way a drain can become clogged is by objects accidentally falling into it. This includes items like rubber bands, hairpins, cotton swabs, paper, or other small objects. These blockages are easy to prevent by being extra careful with items near the drain. If a blockage is already in the drain, we are happy to help you unclog it.

Hair

You lose hair while showering. Over time, these hairs will accumulate in the drain, which can lead to a blockage. This type of blockage is also easy to prevent by regularly removing hair from the drain.

Soap Scum

Just like wastewater, soap residues also stick to the inside of the drain, which can lead to a blockage. This can be the cause of blockages in various drains.

Limescale Buildup

Finally, limescale from water can also cause a drain blockage. Flowing water can leave behind limescale residues in the pipes, leading to buildup and blockages.

Are you experiencing a clogged drain? Choose a professional approach and have your drain unblocked by RBNL's certified technicians. We assure you of 24/7 service, worry-free guarantee, and no unexpected additional costs!

When should you choose to have your drain unblocked?

For a superficial blockage, you can try to unclog the drain yourself in various ways. You can use a plunger or buy a drain snake. However, for most blockages, it's often best to call a specialist directly.

Our professionals have the right knowledge and tools to resolve various drain blockages. Trying to unclog the drain yourself can often make the situation worse. Usually, the blockage is too deep, and there's a high chance of exacerbating the problem.

For instance, a wrong approach or using incorrect tools often pushes the blockage further into the drain. You could also cause damage and wear to the drain. Therefore, let a specialist unclog your drain. We are happy to help ensure your drain is professionally cleared and water flows properly again.

Tips for Unclogging Small Blockages Yourself

Do you want to unclog the drain? You can solve small blockages yourself, such as a shower drain with hair or a sink with soap residues. These blockages are often located just behind the siphon. Below, we have listed some ways you can resolve minor blockages:

Unclogging the drain with water

First, you can try pouring buckets of water down the drain. If you see a whirlpool forming in the water, this is often a sign that the sewer connection is no longer blocked.

Unclogging the drain with baking soda

If this isn't the case, you can try flushing the drain with boiling water and baking soda. Baking soda is a natural remedy that can loosen and dissolve dirt in the drain, helping to clear the blockage.

Unclogging the drain with dish soap

Do you have a clogged drain due to grease? Like baking soda, dish soap works well against grease residues in a drain. Try to unclog the drain by flushing away grease. You can do this by pouring a bucket of hot water and dish soap into your drain. Let it sit for half a day. Once the soaking time has passed, you can open the tap to see if the water drains properly again.

Unclogging the drain with tools

If these methods don't work, you can try to unclog the drain with tools, such as a plunger or a drain snake. Most drains are cleared using this method. However, repeated use of this method can cause wear and tear to the drain.

Cleaning the siphon

For blockages located just behind the siphon, you can also choose to disconnect the siphon and clean it with water and baking soda. When disconnecting, remember to place a bucket underneath the siphon to catch water and debris. This method of drain unblocking can be used for both sink and washbasin blockages. However, for washbasins, be careful not to use boiling water, as it can crack the porcelain.

Tips to Prevent a Clogged Drain

There are several ways you can prevent your drain from getting clogged by food scraps, hair, and other objects. Here are a few tips:

  1. You can place a strainer in every drain opening to catch the largest food scraps. You can empty the strainer into the trash can regularly. This prevents food scraps from clogging the drain.
  2. You can also make sure that objects like pins and cotton swabs don't accidentally end up in the drain, as this can lead to blockages.
  3. You can regularly clean shower drains and sinks by removing trapped hair and rinsing the drains with water and baking soda, which reduces the chance of a blockage.
  4. By preventing large amounts of food or toilet paper from going down the drain, you can also avoid a drain blockage.

Has your drain become clogged anyway? Then contact us and let the specialist unclog your drain.
