What can cause a sink to get clogged?

Is water standing in your sink and are unpleasant odors being released? Then you most likely have a clogged sink. To know how best to unclog the sink, it's helpful to know the cause of the blockage. A clogged sink has various causes. The most common causes are:

Blockages

One way a sink can get clogged is when objects accidentally fall into the drain. Objects like rubber bands, pins, cotton swabs, paper, or other small items that end up in the drain can cause blockages. These types of blockages can simply be prevented by keeping small objects away from the sink.

Food, soap, and/or grease residue

A common cause of a clogged sink is an excess of waste residue that goes down the drain with the water. Over time, grease and food scraps stick to the inside of the sewer pipes, causing the sink's drain to eventually become clogged.

Limescale

Do you have a lot of limescale in your water? Every time you turn on the tap, small particles are left behind in your drain. The accumulation of limescale can lead to a clogged sink.

Pipe problems

A broken or shifted pipe can also be the cause of a clogged sink. However, detecting this problem is difficult. For this, call in a sewer expert.

Is your sink clogged and you want to get it unblocked? Don't worry. Call the sewer specialist and let our skilled technicians unclog your sink today! We are also the right choice for unclogging drains and unclogging washbasins.

Tips for unclogging the sink yourself

Is your sink clogged and do you suspect the blockage is near the surface? If so, you can try to unclog the sink yourself using a few methods. A superficial clog is usually found in or around the siphon (U-bend). You can attempt to remove the blockage by unscrewing and cleaning the siphon. Other ways to tackle a superficial clog are:

Unclogging a sink with water

First, you can try pouring buckets of water down the drain. If you see a whirlpool forming in the water, it's often a sign that the sink is no longer clogged.

Unclogging a sink with baking soda

Baking soda (also known as cleaning salt) is an excellent product for cleaning drains. By flushing the sink with baking soda, you can loosen and dissolve dirt that's stuck inside the drain, which can help clear small clogs.

Unclogging a sink with dish soap

If you suspect your sink is clogged by grease, you can try to dissolve the grease in the drain with dish soap. Fill a bucket with hot water and add a generous amount of dish soap. Slowly pour this mixture down the sink and let it work for a few hours.

Use a dishwasher tablet

Some minor clogs can be resolved by using a dishwasher tablet. Place the tablet in the sink drain and pour hot water over it. Let it sit overnight. The next morning, flush the drain with one or two liters of hot water.

Removing a clog with a vacuum cleaner

Is the water in your sink still draining slowly? If so, wait until all the water has drained and place the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner over the drain opening. A vacuum cleaner can suction out the drain, and with a bit of luck, pull the clog along with it.

Dissolve limescale with baking soda and vinegar

Is your sink clogged because of limescale buildup? The best approach is to try unclogging it by flushing the drain with baking soda and vinegar. Slowly pour the mixture into the drain (it will fizz) and let it sit overnight. Once the soaking time is over, flush the drain with water.

Try the methods mentioned above before resorting to tools.

Plungers can cause wear and tear to your pipes. Therefore, always try the methods mentioned above for unclogging your sink first, or call in a specialist.

Tips to prevent a clogged sink

At RBNL, we see your sewer problem as our problem. That's why we are not only here to unclog your blocked sink, but we also give you some tips to prevent your sink from getting clogged:

  • Regularly flush the siphon with water and soda

By regularly flushing the siphon with warm water and a handful of soda, you clear the inside of the sink from soap residue and body grime. This way, you can prevent a clogged sink and unpleasant odors in your home.

  • Place a strainer in front of the drain

By placing a strainer, food particles, dirt residues, and other objects that can cause a blockage in the sink will remain in the strainer and not end up in the siphon. This reduces the chance of a blockage. Clean the strainer regularly. This way, you can easily solve a budding blockage!

  • Keep objects away

Make sure that objects like pins and cotton swabs do not accidentally end up in the sink, which can lead to blockages.

  • Do not flush food items down the sink

By making sure that large amounts of food items do not end up in the sink, you can prevent the sink from getting clogged by food and grease residues.

Has your sink become clogged after all and you want to unclog it? Then contact us. We are happy to solve it for you! You can also count on us for unclogging downspouts and various cleaning services such as gutter cleaning and main stack cleaning
