The main sewer is the central drain pipe for your home. All drains (kitchen, bathroom, toilet) connect here and flow through the main sewer to the municipal sewer system. A clog in the main sewer is therefore much more serious than a clogged sink or toilet. Multiple drains stop working, water backs up, and in the worst case, sewage flows into your home.
Unclogging the main sewer requires professional equipment and experience. Using a high-pressure jet and camera inspection, our technicians locate and remove the clog without damaging your pipes. Call us at 085 303 9999 and we will help you today.

A clog in the main sewer manifests differently than a local clog in, for example, your shower or sink. With a main sewer clog, you will notice that multiple drains cause problems simultaneously. Do you recognize one or more of these signs? Then it is likely that the problem is in your main sewer system.
If your toilet, shower, and sink are all draining poorly or not at all, the problem is likely not with an individual drain but deeper in the system: the main sewer.
Do you hear gurgling or bubbling sounds from your toilet or drain when water is running elsewhere? This happens because air cannot properly escape due to the blockage in the main sewer.
Sewage smell rising through the drains or that you smell outside near the sewerage system, is a clear sign. Due to the clog, sewer gas cannot flow away normally and seeks another escape route.
This is the most urgent sign. When you see sewage backing up through your shower drain, toilet bowl, or basement floor drain, there is a serious blockage in the main sewer. In that case, immediately call in a specialist.
A main sewer doesn't just get clogged. Often, there is a buildup of material over a longer period, or a structural problem with the pipe itself. The most common causes:
Grease, oil, and soap that go down the drain from the kitchen and bathroom harden and, over time, form a hard layer on the inside of the main pipe. This layer becomes progressively thicker until water can no longer flow through properly. This is one of the most common causes of a clogged main sewer.
Tree roots are always searching for water and nutrients. Small cracks or seams in the main sewer attract roots. They grow into the sewer, forming a network that traps debris and blocks the flow. This is especially common with older clay or concrete pipes.
The main sewer pipe can sag or break due to ground subsidence, construction work, or simply old age. Dirt collects at the lowest point of a sag, causing recurring blockages. If there's a sewer pipe break, unblocking it often isn't enough, and the pipe will need to be replaced.
Wet wipes, sanitary pads, tampons, cat litter, or food scraps: these materials should not be flushed down the sewer. They don't break down in water and build up in the main sewer pipe. When combined with grease and limescale, they can form a hard blockage that completely obstructs the sewer.
Main sewer pipes made of stoneware, cast iron, or concrete that are older than 40 to 50 years often need replacement. Their inner surfaces become rough and uneven, causing dirt to cling more easily. Joints and connections can also loosen, leading to leaks and tree root intrusion.
For a local blockage in your toilet or sink, you might be able to clear it yourself with a plunger or baking soda. However, dealing with the main sewer pipe is different. It runs underneath your home and isn't accessible without professional equipment.
Why clearing your main sewer pipe yourself is not a good idea:
A professional sewer unblocking service has high-pressure jetting equipment, camera inspection tools, and the expertise to identify and resolve the cause. At RBNL, we always offer a fixed price for this, so there are no hidden costs or surprises later.

At RBNL, we operate with fixed prices, so you know exactly what you'll pay upfront. There are no hourly rates, no call-out fees, and no hidden costs.

Our technicians follow a consistent approach that not only solves the problem but also identifies its root cause.
We begin with a camera inspection of the main sewer pipe. The camera is inserted into the pipe through an existing inspection opening or the nearest drain. On a monitor, we can immediately see where the blockage is located, how severe it is, and what's causing it (grease, roots, a break, or something else).
We use a professional high-pressure jetter to remove the blockage. The water pressure is strong enough to clear grease build-ups, root growth, and other obstructions without damaging the pipe. Our technicians adjust the pressure based on the material and condition of your specific pipe.
After clearing the blockage, we always conduct a second camera inspection. This allows us to verify that the blockage is completely gone and to check for any underlying issues (like a sag, crack, or loose connection) that could lead to future blockages.
You will receive a clear report from us, including images from the inspection. If any structural problems are found, we will advise you on the necessary next steps, such as replacing the main sewer pipe.
Many people use the terms 'sewer' and 'main sewer' interchangeably, but there's an important distinction.
The internal drainage system consists of the individual drain pipes within your home, leading from your toilet, shower, sink, and washing machine to a central point. These are typically thinner pipes (40 to 110 mm) and are relatively easy to access.
The main sewer pipe (also known as the main line or external drainage system) is the thicker pipe (often 110 to 160 mm) that collects all wastewater from your home and carries it to the municipal sewer system. This pipe typically runs beneath your home's floor, through the crawl space, and under your garden to the street.
A blockage in your internal plumbing can often be resolved locally. For example, unclogging a drain or unclogging the shower. However, a blockage in the main sewer line affects multiple drains simultaneously and always requires professional help.

In most cases, the main sewer line is unclogged within 1 to 2 hours. For severe blockages or underlying issues such as root intrusion or a sag, it may take longer. Our technician will always inform you in advance about the expected duration.
That depends on your policy terms and the cause. A sudden sewer pipe burst is sometimes covered by your home insurance. Blockages due to neglected maintenance are usually not covered. Always keep the invoice and inspection report to submit to your insurer.
As a homeowner, you are responsible for the sewer system on your own property, up to the connection point with the municipal sewer. This also applies to the main sewer line under and around your home. The municipality is responsible for the sewer system in public areas. For rental properties, the landlord or housing association is responsible for the main sewer line.
Yes, it can. If the main sewer line is completely blocked, sewage water can enter your home through the lowest drainage points. This includes the shower drain, toilet, or a floor drain in the basement. This can cause water damage and health risks. If you experience recurring sewage water, contact us immediately at 085 303 9999.
As a preventive measure, we recommend having the main sewer cleaned every 2 to 3 years. If you have many trees in your garden or an older sewer system, it's advisable to have this done annually.
At RBNL, you receive a 3-month warranty on our work. If the main sewer becomes clogged again within that period, we will return free of charge. Recurring blockages can indicate a structural problem, such as a sag or root intrusion. In that case, we will advise you on a long-term solution.
