Causes of a clogged toilet

A clogged toilet can have various causes. If you want to unclog the toilet, it's helpful to know what caused the blockage. Possible causes include:

Toilet clogged by too much toilet paper

This is the most common cause of a clogged toilet. You can easily prevent this type of blockage by using less toilet paper or at least flushing simultaneously. Using thin toilet paper can also reduce the likelihood of a toilet clogged by too much toilet paper.

Toilet clogged by limescale

Water contains limescale. In some cases, the toilet becomes clogged due to limescale buildup inside the pipe.

Clogged toilet due to blockages

Larger objects flushed down the toilet can cause a blockage. These include diapers, tampons, sanitary pads, and wet wipes.

Blockage due to grease residue

Grease residue from food flushed down the toilet can also cause a toilet blockage. Grease can harden quickly, making it difficult for water to flow through the pipe.

Unclogging a toilet yourself: 5 tips

For small and superficial blockages, you can use the methods below to unclog the toilet yourself:

Removing visible blockages with rubber gloves

Has your toilet become clogged by an object you can still see in the toilet, such as a diaper, a tampon, sanitary pads, or wet wipes? Try to remove the blockage with rubber gloves.

Unclogging a toilet with baking soda

Flushing the toilet with baking soda can work wonders. It dissolves unpleasant odors and buildup inside the pipe. For this method, you must first remove all water from the bowl. Then, pour a bucket of warm water and an entire package of baking soda into the bowl. It's best to let this soak overnight. Afterward, you can try to flush gently to see if the blockage has cleared.

Unclogging a toilet with baking soda and vinegar

With baking soda and vinegar, you can easily dissolve and flush away limescale residue, preventing it from building up inside the pipe. Make a mixture of baking soda and vinegar and carefully pour it (as the mixture fizzes quite a bit) into the toilet bowl. Let the mixture work for half a night, then flush with warm water.

Unclogging a toilet with dish soap

Dish soap can also help prevent blockages caused by grease or paper. This is because dish soap helps water and grease bind together, which can start to clear the blockage. Mix warm water with a generous amount of dish soap and pour it into the toilet from about a meter high.

Try the methods mentioned above before resorting to tools.

Plungers can cause wear and tear to the toilet's pipes. Therefore, when unclogging a toilet, always try the methods mentioned above first, or call in a specialist.

When unclogging the toilet, make sure not to use boiling water. This can cause the porcelain of the toilet bowl to crack, leading to a much bigger problem. Before you start unclogging the toilet, also cover the floor with old cloths, sheets, or newspapers.

Tips to prevent a clogged toilet

We not only want to ensure your sewer problem is solved, but we also like to help you prevent a clogged toilet. That's why we offer 4 useful tips:

  1. Don't use too much toilet paper, or flush the paper in between uses. This prevents the drain from getting blocked by a build-up of toilet paper. Using thin paper (1 or 2-ply) can also help prevent a clogged toilet.
  2. If you suffer a lot from limescale, you can prevent a blockage by regularly flushing the toilet with baking soda and vinegar. This mixture dissolves limescale residues, keeping the drain free of limescale.
  3. Do not flush any form of food down the toilet. The toilet is not intended for disposing of food scraps, oil, or grease. Especially grease residues can quickly harden and cause a blockage.
  4. Make sure that large items such as tampons, sanitary pads, diapers, or wet wipes are kept out of the toilet. You can prevent this by placing a small waste bin next to the toilet where these items can be disposed of.

If you do experience a blockage and want to unclog the toilet, then enlist the help of our certified technicians. We will solve any sewer problem for you, so you no longer have to worry. When we come by, the reason is often already troublesome enough!
