For small and superficial blockages, you can use the methods below to unclog the toilet yourself:
Has your toilet become clogged by an object you can still see in the toilet, such as a diaper, a tampon, sanitary pads, or wet wipes? Try to remove the blockage with rubber gloves.
Flushing the toilet with baking soda can work wonders. It dissolves unpleasant odors and buildup inside the pipe. For this method, you must first remove all water from the bowl. Then, pour a bucket of warm water and an entire package of baking soda into the bowl. It's best to let this soak overnight. Afterward, you can try to flush gently to see if the blockage has cleared.
With baking soda and vinegar, you can easily dissolve and flush away limescale residue, preventing it from building up inside the pipe. Make a mixture of baking soda and vinegar and carefully pour it (as the mixture fizzes quite a bit) into the toilet bowl. Let the mixture work for half a night, then flush with warm water.
Dish soap can also help prevent blockages caused by grease or paper. This is because dish soap helps water and grease bind together, which can start to clear the blockage. Mix warm water with a generous amount of dish soap and pour it into the toilet from about a meter high.
Plungers can cause wear and tear to the toilet's pipes. Therefore, when unclogging a toilet, always try the methods mentioned above first, or call in a specialist.
When unclogging the toilet, make sure not to use boiling water. This can cause the porcelain of the toilet bowl to crack, leading to a much bigger problem. Before you start unclogging the toilet, also cover the floor with old cloths, sheets, or newspapers.
