Causes of a clogged toilet

A clogged toilet has several causes. Do you want to unclog the toilet? Then it's helpful to know what caused the clog. Possible causes are:

Toilet clogged by too much toilet paper

This is the most common cause of a clogged toilet. You can easily prevent this type of clogging by using less toilet paper or at least flushing at the same time. Using thin toilet paper can also reduce a clogged toilet caused by too much toilet paper.

WC clogged by limescale

Water contains lime. In some cases, the toilet becomes clogged because limescale builds up on the inside of the pipe.

Clogged toilet due to blockages

Larger items flushed down the toilet can cause a blockage. These include diapers, tampons, sanitary napkins and wet wipes.

Clogging due to grease residue

Grease residue from food flushed down the toilet can also cause a toilet blockage. This is because grease can harden quickly, making it difficult for water to slide through the pipe.

Unclog your own toilet: 5 tips

For small and superficial blockages, you can use the methods below to unclog the toilet yourself:

Remove visible blockage with rubber gloves

Is your toilet clogged by an object you can still see in the toilet, such as a diaper, tampon, sanitary napkin or wet wipes? If so, try removing the blockage with rubber gloves.

Unclog toilet with baking soda

Flushing the toilet with baking soda can work wonders. It dissolves unpleasant odors and deposits on the inside of the pipe. For this method, you first need to remove all the water from the bowl. Then pour a bucket of warm water and a whole pack of baking soda into the pot. This is best left overnight. Then you can try to gently flush to see if the clog is resolved.

Unclog toilet with baking soda and vinegar

With baking soda and vinegar, you can easily dissolve lime residue and allow it to flush, so that it does not form deposits on the inside of the pipe. Make a mixture of baking soda and vinegar and carefully pour it (because the mixture fizzes quite a bit) into the toilet bowl. Let the mixture soak in overnight and then flush with warm water.

Unclog toilet with dish soap

Detergent can also prevent a clog caused by grease or paper. In fact, dishwashing detergent creates the bond between water and grease that can trigger the unclogging. Mix warm water with a splash of dishwashing detergent and pour it into the toilet at a height of one meter.

Try the above ways first before choosing materials

Ploppers can cause wear and tear to the toilet pipe. Therefore, when unclogging toilets, always choose the above ways first or call in a specialist.

When unclogging the toilet, be careful not to use boiling water. This can crack the porcelain of the toilet bowl and then you are much further from home. Before you start unclogging the toilet, also cover the floor with old cloths, sheets or newspapers.

Tips to prevent a clogged toilet

We not only want to make sure that your sewer problem is solved, but we also like to help you prevent a clogged toilet. That's why we offer 4 handy tips:

  1. Don't use too much toilet paper or flush the paper in between uses. This will prevent the drain from clogging due to a blockage of toilet paper. Using thin paper (1 or 2 ply) can also help prevent a clogged toilet.
  2. If you suffer a lot of limescale, you can prevent a blockage by flushing the toilet regularly with baking soda and vinegar. This mixture dissolves lime residue, keeping the drain free of limescale.
  3. Do not flush any form of food down the toilet. The toilet is not meant for discharging food scraps, oil or grease. Grease residue in particular can harden quickly and cause a blockage.
  4. Make sure to keep large items such as tampons, pads, diapers or wet wipes out of the toilet. You can prevent this by placing a trash can next to the toilet where these items can be discarded.

Do you still suffer from a clog and want to unclog your toilet? Then enlist the help of our certified technicians. We will solve any sewer problem for you, so you no longer have to worry. When we come by, the cause is often annoying enough!
