What can clog the sink?

Is water staying in your sink and releasing unpleasant odors? Then you are most likely dealing with a clogged sink. To know the best way to unclog your sink, it is helpful to know the cause of the clog. A clogged sink has several causes. The most common causes are:

Blockages

One way the sink can become clogged is for objects to accidentally enter the drain. Objects such as rubber bands, pins, cotton buds, papers or other small objects that end up in the drain can cause blockages. These types of blockages can be prevented simply by keeping small objects away from the sink.

Food, soap and/or grease residue

A common cause of a clogged sink is excess waste that enters the drain with the water. Over time, grease and food scraps get stuck to the inside of the sewer system, causing the sink drain to clog at some point.

Lime Scale

Is there a lot of lime in your water? Every time you turn on the faucet, small particles are left behind in your drain. The buildup of limescale can lead to a clogged sink.

Problems in leadership

A broken or shifted pipe can also be the cause of a clogged sink. Detecting this problem is just tricky. For this, call in a sewer expert.

Is your sink clogged and you want to unclog it? No worries. Call the sewer specialist and have your sink unblocked by our skilled technicians today! You've also come to the right place for drain unclogging and sink unclogging.

Tips for unclogging the sink yourself

Is your sink clogged and you feel that the blockage is quite on the surface? Then you can try to unclog the sink yourself in a number of ways. A surface blockage is usually in or around the siphon. You can try to remove the blockage by unscrewing and cleaning the siphon. Other ways to clear a surface blockage are:

Unclog sink with water

First, you can try pouring buckets of water down the drain. When you see a whirlpool forming in the water, this is often the sign that the sink is no longer clogged.

Unclog sink with baking soda

Baking soda (also known as cleaning salt) is a miracle drain cleaner. By flushing the sink with baking soda, you can loosen and dissolve dirt stuck inside the drain, which can unclog small clogs.

Unclog sink with dish soap

If you think your sink is clogged with grease residue, you can try dissolving the grease residue in the drain with dish soap. Fill a bucket with hot water and add a generous splash of dish soap. After this, slowly pour the mixture down the sink and let it take effect for a few hours.

Use a dishwasher tablet

Some minor clogs can be fixed by using a dishwasher tablet. Place the tablet in the sink drain and pour hot water on it. Let it soak overnight. The morning after, flush with one or two gallons of hot water.

Clog removal with a vacuum cleaner

Does the water in your sink still drain slowly? Then wait until there is no more water in your sink and put the mouth of your vacuum cleaner on the drain. With a vacuum cleaner, you can suck the drain out, with any luck sucking the clog along with it.

Dissolve limescale with baking soda and vinegar

Has your sink become clogged with limescale? If so, the best way to try to unclog the sink is to flush the drain with baking soda and vinegar. Slowly pour the mixture down the drain (because the mixture will fizz) and let it soak overnight. When the soaking time is over, flush the drain with water.

Try the above ways first before choosing materials

Ploppers can cause wear and tear to the pipe. Therefore, always choose the above ways to unclog your sink first or call in a specialist.

Tips to prevent a clogged sink

At RBNL, we see your sewer problem as our problem. That's why we are not only here for you to unclog your clogged sink, but we also give you some tips to prevent your sink from becoming clogged:

  • Flush the siphon regularly with water and baking soda

By regularly flushing the siphon with warm water and a handful of baking soda, you will make the inside of the sink free of soap scum and body dirt. This way, you can prevent a clogged sink and unpleasant odors in your home.

  • Place a strainer in front of the drain hole

By installing a strainer, food, debris and other items that can cause a clog in the sink will stay in the strainer and not end up in the siphon. This way you reduce the chances of a clog. Clean the strainer regularly. This way you can easily solve an incipient clog!

  • Keep objects at a distance

Make sure items such as pins and cotton swabs do not accidentally end up in the sink, which can lead to blockages.

  • Do not flush food down the sink

By making sure that large amounts of food do not end up in the sink, you can prevent food and grease residue from clogging the sink.

Has your sink still become clogged and you want to unclog it? Then contact us. We will be happy to solve it for you! You can also count on us for drainpipe unblocking and various cleaning tasks such as gutter cleaning and down pipe cleaning
